Yveline Loiseur, 1st prize

“The title, Entre présence et absence(Between Presence and Absence) is borrowed from Henri Michaux, poet that depicted the passage of time while playing with the memory of forms.
The photographs in the series show hospital beds at the Hôtel Dieu in Charlieu, in the Loire department. Today the building that houses them, erected in the eighteenth century, has become the Hospital Museum. The series comprises 14 photographs, corresponding to the 14 beds situated face to face along the walls of the great sick room, in service up until 1981. Each bed is presented like a little theatre of emotions, a muffled and bared reminiscence of the King’s bed in his bedroom in Versailles. All the same, all different, the beds are exemplary locations for the spectacle of intimacy. The curtain in the foreground expresses this ambiguity; closed it conceals suffering from the eyes of others, open it unveils the memory of pain and exhibits its disappearance.
Natural light irradiates the interior space of each bed and sculpts the folds of the fabric. The exposure time, of about ten minutes, records the slow diminishing of daylight (the guardian of the Museum turned out the artificial lights during the photo sessions), it allows the capture of an image that disappears secretly in the silence, accompanying a contemplative, meditative vision. This long pause also allows the fixation of a fossilized memory, present in the variety of the fabrics, the traces of aging, of mending.
If light emphasizes the vestiges present in the folds of the sheets and the curtains, the tightly framed shot allows the eye to linger on the materials and accentuates the perception of a closed and autonomous space.  It isolates the object from its context in order to provoke a comparison to painting, notably to the monochromes of Robert Ryman”.

Born in 1965, she graduated from l’École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie in Arles and from l’Université Panthéon Sorbonne, Paris I (Post-graduate dissertation in the relationships of photography and painting in the work of Gerhard Richter under the direction of Bernard Teyssèdre, Marc Jimenez and Gilbert Lascault).
