Julien Chatelin, winner

“It was while traveling the roads of Egypt, far from Tahrir Square, that the sense of the revolution appeared more clear to me. On the outskirts of Cairo, on the other side of the Ring Road, far from the city centre, one plunges gradually into a strangely immobile world, as if struck down in mid-stride, where developers’ megalomaniac projects seem to have been halted. Abandoned territories, still inhabited by a few motionless individuals, as if in endless wait, haggard. The unfinished constructions that punctuate the desert landscape provoke an impression of defeat, absurdity. A door planted in the middle of the desert, a forest of lampposts, cardboard buildings… One passes brutally from nothing to the bizarre, and a tension emerges between objects, individuals and their context. Egyptorama is a “road trip” that leads nowhere. 8 000 kilometers of road, a shift outside of time in a decor that hesitates between the kitsch aesthetic of Peplum and an atmosphere fitting the end of the world.
