Joël Denot, finalist

JOËL DENOT is a photographer; he always has been. Contrary to photography that seeks to depict the real, his work concentrates on the essential elements of photography: light, colour and the relationship with time.
Entirely realised at the time of shooting, the work of JOËL DENOT is manifested from a purely photographic gesture, without laboratory work.
In all of his work, one can say that there is a subject, that there is an image, a body. Nevertheless, at first glance, his work doesn't seem 'photographic'; it rather invokes painting, even painting that could be qualified as abstract, or geometric. We have the feeling of being in front of paintings.
Because the image doesn't reveal itself immediately, that it supposes taking the time to look; the body of the artist, present in most of his work, seems drowned in colour.
Because, what it causes to appear is a play of coloured or luminous forms that evoke nothing precisely, unless it's the superposition of surfaces, assemblages of monochromes.
Because its dimensions reflect pictorial formats more than typical photographic formats (even if today these formats can be very different, oscillating between the postcard and the painting of large dimensions).
JOËL DENOT is one of those artists that react against the multiplication of images, and, in his domain, against a photography that is simply the "recording of the world". His photos are created with a view camera and use photographic paper as a medium.
For him, photography is primarily what it was at its origin: an unveiling by light, an apparition.  The first photographic images, daguerreotypes, were certainly images of reality, but they were above all, luminous, fleeting and ghostly images,.
Joël Denot was born in 1961 in Rennes. He lives and works in Japan. He exhibited since the late 1990s in France and abroad.
