FRANÇOIS CHEVAL

French citizen, born one year after the death of Stalin, a few months after Diên Biên Phû, under the twin stars of of anti-stalinism and anti-colonialism.

After studies in History and Ethnology at the Université de Franche-Comté, he started working in museums in 1982, successively in the Jura and on the Island of Réunion.

He became the director of the Musée Nicéphore Niépce (Chalon-sur-Saône) consecrated to the history and the customs of Photography, in 1996. There, he attempted, surrounded by artists, historians, engineers and researchers, to innovate, as much as possible, in the field of museography. 

His reflection on photography at the museum culminated in the publication of

“Déception, mélancolie et malentendu, contre la fatalité de la visite du musée”, in Musées et collections publiques de France, n°251, 2007

Published numerous manualsand articles on photographers supported by the museum he directs: J. Batho, P. Knapp, H. Madani, Y. Trémorin, P. Tosani, J.L. Moulène, A. Leccia, C. Chevrier, A Zaatari, M. Pernot, V Marnat, Laurent Millet, Mac Adams, etc.
