ELGER ESSER

Elger Esser was born in 1967 in Stuttgart and spent his childhood in Rome.
In the 1990’s, he joined the famous class of Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Kunstakademie de Düsseldorf. Today he still lives and works in Düsseldorf.

Vedute andlandscapes are classic themes that occupy a central place in the photographic work of Esser. His works are characterised by large monochromatic surfaces, the predilection for a uniform, diffuse light as well as a constant tension between micro- and macro-structures.

Sensitive and precise in the way he observes the world that surrounds him, Esser strives to capture special moments that reveal the character and the specific mood of a landscape. It’s only natural that Elger Esser’s photographs evoke the travel writing of the end of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. His last series pushes even further the boundary beween painting and photography.

Elger Esser is represented by the Thaddaeus Ropac Gallery.
